Book Synopsis

The bestselling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible new near-future thriller—a heist story set on the moon.

Jasmine Bashara never signed up to be a hero. She just wanted to get rich.

Not crazy, eccentric-billionaire rich, like many of the visitors to her hometown of Artemis, humanity’s first and only lunar colony. Just rich enough to move out of her coffin-sized apartment and eat something better than flavored algae. Rich enough to pay off a debt she’s owed for a long time.

So when a chance at a huge score finally comes her way, Jazz can’t say no. Sure, it requires her to graduate from small-time smuggler to full-on criminal mastermind. And it calls for a particular combination of cunning, technical skills, and large explosions—not to mention sheer brazen swagger. But Jazz has never run into a challenge her intellect can’t handle, and she figures she’s got the ‘swagger’ part down.

The trouble is, engineering the perfect crime is just the start of Jazz’s problems. Because her little heist is about to land her in the middle of a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself.

Trapped between competing forces, pursued by a killer and the law alike, even Jazz has to admit she’s in way over her head. She’ll have to hatch a truly spectacular scheme to have a chance at staying alive and saving her city.

Jazz is no hero, but she is a very good criminal.

That’ll have to do.

Propelled by its heroine’s wisecracking voice, set in a city that’s at once stunningly imagined and intimately familiar, and brimming over with clever problem-solving and heist-y fun, Artemis is another irresistible brew of science, suspense, and humor from #1 bestselling author Andy Weir.

Andy’s writing is snappy and awesome as always. It felt a little similar to The Martian. Whichever one you read first will be preferred. Easily my favourite active sci-fi author

If you're a fan of his other books, go into this one with lower expectations in terms of scale but optimism for a good time.
  • I loathed this book

I only read this book for the 372 pages we’ll never get back and it was a chore. First of all, the main character has not a likable trait about her. Seriously, I didn’t at any point root for this character and that’s a problem since the entire story is from her point of view. The story feels like something the writer came up with when he was 15 about his 13 year old sister. That’s the maturity level we are talking here. The jokes are plain stupid, the sarcasm which never ends was old after the 2nd chapter and I might never read another Andy Weir novel again

Really poorly written personality characteristics for the female lead. I bought this book because I loved The Martian. I couldn’t finish this one. The book didn’t have a flow and this author has a much stronger sense of writing with a male lead. His female characters in this book were all written so terribly. Leaving this book unfinished halfway through and I’m going to try and forget it.

Similar to The Martian, well-written, entertaining, and humorous. Weir does a great job of breaking physics and chemistry down for the lay person.

I really couldn’t stop reading this book. I was the same way with The Martian. I like Andy Weir’s stories. I will recommend to my like minded friends.

Just what I needed to get back into reading for pleasure after a break. The main character is perfectly flawed. The story is compelling. And I love “hard” SiFi.

I enjoyed the book but was surprised by the harsh language.
