Book Synopsis

How to Build Self-Discipline to Exercise: Discover Proven Strategies to Finally Get in Shape and Exercise on a Regular Basis for the Rest of Your Life

Everywhere you go, you see gyms, videos, and books about exercise, advertising how they can help you get in shape fast and easy. You've probably even put some money down before, vowing that THIS was the year you'd get in shape, lose that extra weight, and become the energetic person you know is hiding inside you. Unfortunately, life happens, and you fall into the habit of "I'll start tomorrow."

Your motivation drops, and your self-discipline fails to push you through to achieve your goals. You begin to make excuses: you'll be really sore after working out, it's been too long since you've last exercised, you don't have willpower, your friends and family tell you to be happy with how you are, you think you're too weak, inflexible or otherwise unfit for exercise, and many more. There was that one time you started a program, but you couldn't keep up with the weekly or monthly goals, so you got frustrated and gave up.

All of that has added up to make you think you're incapable of starting and continuing an exercise program. You're afraid you aren't mentally or physically strong enough, but still hold out the hope that someday a magic pill will change all that.

The magic exists today, but it's not as easy or fast as swallowing a pill. However, it can be simple and enjoyable. How to Build Self-Discipline to Exercise is a concise, practical guidebook on how to introduce and keep exercise in your life. Inside, you'll learn:
why the most common type of motivation people use to exercise is usually ineffective (and which types of motivation are much stronger)the wrong "P" that will lead you to giving up when you face obstacleshow to overcome procrastination and finally start exercising – including a slightly uncomfortable trick that will ensure you'll get plenty of exercisehow to find time to exercise despite a hectic schedule (and surprising math that shows you actually lose time when you don't make time for exercise)practical tricks and tips to stay motivated forever, even when you encounter obstacleshow to enjoy exercise while still getting the most powerful benefits of it (hint: if your workout involves "work," it's not a good workout)how to prevent injuries, improve recovery, and handle the inevitable muscle soreness so you stick to exercise even if your body acts against youhow to deal with other people, wrong expectations, and negativity (from both your surroundings and yourself in the form of self-criticism or self-doubt)
When put together and acted upon, the six chapters in this book – supported by over 80 references to scientific studies and credible experts – will help you form a new habit and make one of the most important changes you'll ever make in your life.

Martin Meadows has a style of writing about Self-improvement that is well-researched, well-explained and uber-practical. In this book on exercise, he not only uses scientific resources and well-known experts on habit creation and health but also his own extra-ordinary experiences and expertise to help the reader consider and craft the kind of Fitness habits and routines that will lead to real success. After reading the book cover—to-cover, I found the content is totally in line with what I am reading from others and find a lot of confidence and courage in reading his own journey to disciplined exercise. If you are looking to build bulletproof routines that you can enjoy and stick with, I highly recommend this book.

This is the fifth Martin Meadows book I've read and I've enjoyed them all. The author provided a free copy to me asking for an honest review in return, so here it is. (The review wasn't influenced by the free copy. You can easily find my previous reviews of his books which pre-date this free copy on the other main electronic book store). If you've read one of his books before, you'll be familiar with the format. If not, you may want to download the free sample for the Kindle and give it a try. I enjoy his writing style and find the books to be useful. He tends to write shorter books (they can be read in an hour or two) that focus on a particular subject and highlight the relevant research into the topic, along with extensive footnoting of his sources. This book has six chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of exercising: How to get motivated to exercise, How to find time to exercise, How to stay motivated, How to enjoy exercise, How to improve recovery and Misc exercise-related topics. I tend to find several good nuggets in each of his books and this is no different. I like his kindle books for reference, and tend to highlight/bookmark them much more than usual, to refer to later. I feel like each of his books has been relevant to me and I've taken something away from each of them that was was worth the price of the book.

Dear Martin, happy to say, this is the best book I have read on exercise. You given so many motivations in this book to consider. The techniques are really practical and simple to follow. Takes away all the excuses that my mind makes to ban exercise. No excuses left to quit exercise. I highly recommend this book to all who make decisions to exercise, they start but quit in the middle. This book gives so many choices and opportunities that bans all excuses not to exercise. Now I can continue exercising, without skipping any session and to enjoy it at the same time.
