Since the very commencement of the Company’s rule, the peasant question figured as the key question in Bengal. This was due to the fact that of all the classes in society the peasants suffered most from the imposition of an alien rule. It is significant that under the Company’s rule there was a reversal in the position of the peasant, in the status that he enjoyed as a useful member of society.
