Book Synopsis

From the author of the New York Times bestselling Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, comes Unholy Night, the next evolution in dark historical revisionism.

They're an iconic part of history's most celebrated birth. But what do we really know about the Three Kings of the Nativity, besides the fact that they followed a star to Bethlehem bearing strange gifts? The Bible has little to say about this enigmatic trio. But leave it to Seth Grahame-Smith, the brilliant and twisted mind behind Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to take a little mystery, bend a little history, and weave an epic tale.

In Grahame-Smith's telling, the so-called "Three Wise Men" are infamous thieves, led by the dark, murderous Balthazar. After a daring escape from Herod's prison, they stumble upon the famous manger and its newborn king. The last thing Balthazar needs is to be slowed down by young Joseph, Mary and their infant. But when Herod's men begin to slaughter the first born in Judea, he has no choice but to help them escape to Egypt.

It's the beginning of an adventure that will see them fight the last magical creatures of the Old Testament; cross paths with biblical figures like Pontius Pilate and John the Baptist; and finally deliver them to Egypt. It may just be the greatest story never told.

The author may not be the most fabulously impressive writer or have an eternal writing flare that lingers in the memory, but he does have a way of taking a story you believed to be finished --because it is, by all means, history -- and introducing a twist that was not necessarily needed but enjoyable to imagine the "what if" that seeps through the openings left by history's storytellers. It is important to realize the twist is not factual in order to not be appalled or consider the novel disrespectful to the subject matter addressed. Enjoy it at face value as a work of fiction.

Not a single disappointing moment. Being a lover of the Bible, history and great fantasy, this has become the best book I have ever read. I thought Seth Grahame-Smith was genius before with AL:VH, but Unholy Night is the king. The ability to take us back 2000 years and paint such a vivid picture, and then to add this kind of life and vision to stories we all know. I just... I don't have the words. Everything is this book fit perfectly together. It's remarkable and Seth Grahame-Smith is a talent that only comes along once in a lifetime. I mean that. His talent can easily be compared to that of Mark Twain. The ability to tell complicated stories in a comfortable way and to keep all of these historical facts lined up and working perfectly is a gift from God. Hallelujah!
