    Beautifully written, fanciful story of a shipwrecked family making the most of their situation with a combination of skill, persistence, and luck. Worth reading a few times.

    What kind of message are teachers trying to send by making students read a book about a family that believes not only in brutality but doesn't respect the native people or animals around them. They do this in the name of their religious beliefs, not once pausing to think of their implications on the island. This is so not a children's book.
