The protagonist will have to go through many trials to break into the world of literature. This is hampered by a number of obstacles, including high prices for Austrian accommodation. He has to share an apartment with rather eccentric neighbours, the number of which sometimes reaches a catastrophic scale. Eventually, stories he falls in to because of his roommates simply do not leave time for writing.
Birmingham’s novel will appeal to all connoisseurs of black humour and at the same time will be of interest to anyone who is not yet familiar with contemporary Australian literature.
