Book Synopsis

Behind the buttoned-up façade of The Clifford Charity School for Wayward Girls reside some of London’s most brilliant ladies. For the extraordinary young women of the secret Swooning Virgins Society are capable of taking down an utter scoundrel —or redeeming an aristocrat worthy of a woman’s love . . .

On a dark street in London, Mairi Cameron finally tracks down Daniel Brixton, the childhood friend who mysteriously disappeared from her Scottish hometown years ago. Now, however, he’s an arresting stranger whose life she promptly saves. But rather than being grateful, Daniel doesn’t believe Mairi is who she claims to be—or that her dear grandmother stands accused of his murder. Mairi is desperate to convince Daniel to return to Scotland with her, not only to prove he’s alive, but because of the strong feelings she still harbors for him. . .

The Swooning Virgins Society quickly goes into action, and standing before them, Daniel is convinced to help--if only to stay near the alluring Mairi. Posing as her husband for their travels only escalates the passions between them. And once Daniel faces the dark truth of his past, he must decide if he’s ready to claim a new future—with Mairi his side . . .

Daniel Brixton has watched and protected Lady Clifford and the ladies of Clifford school for a long time. Mairi Cameron has come to London from Scotland to find her old childhood friend who mysteriously disappeared more than twenty years ago. She follows, find and saves his life one night in the stews. The man she saves and claims to be her friend Daniel Adair is now known as Daniel Brixton. Mairi has come to convince him to return to Scotland to help prove her grandmother did not murder the boy Daniel Adair, because he is still alive. Daniel cannot remember her or her grandmother or Coldstream in Scotland. He doesn’t believe Mairi. The ladies of the Swooning Virgin Society and their husbands look into Mairi’s story and convince Daniel to go with her to Scotland to find out what the real story is. As they travel, an attraction grows between them. What will Daniel find when they reach Coldstream? This is a riveting story. Old secrets, betrayal, and brutal memories reveal a past Daniel could never have imagined and the possibility of a future he refuses to think about. Will Daniel accept his true identity and the feelings he has for Mairi? Can they solve the mystery and prove her grandmother innocent of murder? A dangerous mystery, a wonderful romance, a heroine as tough as her hero, and an awesome epilogue. Daniel’s story is a fantastic addition to the series. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.
  • Mystery and Romance combined!

When Mairi goes searching for her long lost friend to help save her grandmother’s life, she is not ready for what she finds in Daniel Brixton. His scars on the outside harbor the rough life he has lived, but the scars inside are reminders of his past. He is impressed with the determination and strength of the small woman who claims he is someone she knew as a child, but in the beginning he does not want to travel with her because he is dubious of her claims. He reluctantly changes his mind, and he sets off with her to the wilds of Scotland. There he finds himself not only embroiled in a mystery, but also on the verge of love. Daniel is one of the characters we have been introduced to in the past in the other Swooning Virgin Society books. This is number five. However, if you have never read the others, or it has been a long time since you have picked up one of the others, this book is meant to be a standalone. The characters we loved in the other book make their appearance, but one will not be lost at all. In addition, you could read them out of order without feeling you have had any of the other plots spoiled. I do recommend reading the others as well, as they are an enjoyable romantic romp. I was very invested in the character of Mairi. She was strong and caring and her motivation was believable. Daniel, of course, I had had a soft spot in the previous books, and was glad to see he got his own story. Though the title is a spoiler of sorts, the road to get to his final destination is filled with twists, turns, and characters that were interesting and fun. I sped through this book, as I was having so much fun I did not want to leave my new book friends. Eating and chores were secondary to finishing my book. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to romance readers, but also to those who also just want a light read. I would call this a beach read, but as it is coming out in the fall, it is more like a read by a cozy fire. Either way, this book will leave you with a good feel.
