Book Synopsis

In the latest thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive—and a terrifying weapon.

Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body—and killed him.

After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team—and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed—it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close—though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman—or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.

"The 50th book proves this series truly is the gold standard.” — Associated Press

Interesting, intriguing, well documented story. The usual little sexy parts, ups and downs investigation, and a great final chapter where Eve gets her killer to admit what he’s done. Always love J D Robbs endings.

JD Robb (Nora Roberts) has delivered another great piece!! Eve and Roacke are her best characters of any books I’ve read. I can’t wait for the next one!!

50 books and each one feels like visiting an old friend. I highly recommend reading this series in order.

I’m in perfect agreement with the other low ratings. A very dry case to solve, no sub-story with my other favorite characters. Minimal interaction between Roark and Dallas. Is this the end of the series? Are we just cranking out books to fulfill a contract? I’ve purchased the entire series and no regrets - however, will wait and trust the reviews on the next book before wasting my money.
  • Predictable, boring, and lacking substance.

Golden in Death did not feel like an In Death book by J.D.Rob, at all! Nadine who would have been hounding Eve about this case, was no where, but one slight mention of her name. Mavis, Leonardo, and Belle, were mentioned in passing. The book focused on the crime, which was boring, and very predictable. The criminals were basically a repeat of two earlier criminals, she wrote about. The characters make the series, and keeps the reader returning to her stories, not the crimes (for which there are more than enough in circulation). Unfortunately, Nora Roberts is not able to keep up with the characters in her series any longer. The whole book felt like a rewrite of her previous works, by someone else. So Sad.
  • Nothing new 😞

I seriously love this series and it’s the only one I’ll go crazy and pay full price. I have every book and have reread them many times. Unfortunately, like another long time series I USED to read, it’s become predictable and has a lot less substance than usual. Maybe it’s time to pick up the pace of the time frame cuz I seriously need Eve & Roarke’s relationship to move the heck along and evolve already. Just them quickly and routinely having wild sex a time or two, having a little tiff about money and then throwing in a couple of mild insults with Summerset isn’t enough after 50 books. Normally I go through a new book in a couple of hours. This took me FOUR DAYS. It’s kind of like the 2nd LOTR movie, feels like a filler. Please, please, please...make the next one (already preordered) worth the wait and my hard earned money.
  • So disappointed!

I have read all 50 In Death books and love the characters. Dallas, Roark, Peabody, McNab and the rest make a great team. With that said, I was so disappointed in this book. Along with a very boring and l o n g investigation, there was only a reference to other characters who make the “family’ an interesting read. Dry and no drama.

I love Nora/JD. There is nothing she’s published that I haven’t read, multiple times. Because this is the 50th book in the In Death series (And I own every single one) I thought it was going to be really something extra. Something more personal, or exciting or life-changing for Eve or Roarke. Her writing is, as always, impeccable. THIS story however is just another murder mystery with unintelligent villains. Blah sums this up best. And as a faithful patron I feel like a knife is in my chest.
