Book Synopsis

A breakaway bestseller since its first printing, All Souls takes us deep into Michael Patrick MacDonald's Southie, the proudly insular neighborhood with the highest concentration of white poverty in America. Rocked by Whitey Bulger's crime schemes and busing riots, MacDonald's Southie is populated by sharply hewn characters like his Ma, a miniskirted, accordion-playing single mother who endures the deaths of four of her eleven children. Nearly suffocated by his grief and his community's code of silence, MacDonald tells his family story here with gritty but moving honesty.

Wonderful descriptive writing. The author is close in age to myself and I enjoyed reading about the disco and punk music scenes. Sad but such a great book !

Having grown up in many foster homes and slums , I thought this life was only for minorities . The project life in this book could easily been Watts(black) ,Allied Gardens(Samoan) Ramona Gardens (Chicano ) the common denominator appears to be proverty.Thank you for opening my eyes!

An unbelievably candid book. I can't even imagine the heartbreak Mr MacDonald suffered while reliving it all for thee world to read!! I saw a review on this book that said the book should be mandated reading in schools. I agree. So many deaths, so many injustices, so much grief and sadness resulting from drugs, thugs, guns...and yet Mr MacDonald rose above it all. I cried through so many of these pages, and I rejoiced when he found his 'calling' and his determination to show the world just what growing up in 'the projects' was like. I rejoiced at the strength of his faith and his hope for future generations. And these things cannot get better just by wishing them away...thank God for activists of his caliber!

Read this book some time ago. Excellent writing. Makes you feel like you want to jump in and rescue this family. I've heard a lot about this area in Boston and after reading this, realize its all true. Well written memoir.
