I’ve been hooked since Family Markowitz, so I keep reading, actually waiting for her next release. Since I didn’t really devour Chalk Artist, I was a little hesitant on Sam, but this one didn’t disappoint. Character development is a Goodman signature and each of the characters read authentic from Sam to her autistic brother to her dreamer father. With the rock climbing theme as the glue, the story weaves its tale through personal tragedy, struggle and love. You’re invested in the characters because of the authenticity and unique yet familiar storylines. The end lingers like all good books.

Absolutely loved this book from the writing to the story, it was so well done. This book is written from the perspective of Sam starting when she is 7 continuing through age 19. Sam’s mom has an abusive boyfriend, her brother is special needs, and her Dad is not always reliable. It’s a coming of age story of how Sam handles each and every situation she faces whether its positive or negative. This author tackles difficult situations a child/teen/ adult may face, but all through the eyes of Sam as a child, teen, and adult, which opens your eyes to domestic abuse, coach/athlete relationship issues, alcohol abuse, child abuse on how this can affect family relationships, romantic relationships and future goals. The positive is this book highlighted that positive relationships and friendships can help a person be successful in life. Great book for book clubs including those at high schools as it could lead to discussions on how to handle their own or help support their friends handle difficult situations.
