Book Synopsis

"It's absolutely delightful, and I would recommend it to anyone who's a fan of Sarah Caudwell, or Agatha Christie, or anyone who loves really clever British murder mysteries set in the '20s." - Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl.

On his return from South Africa, Charles Knox is invited to spend the weekend at the country home of Sir Neville Strickland, whose beautiful wife Rosamund was once Knox's fiancee. But in the dead of night Sir Neville is murdered. Who did it? As suspicion falls on each of the house guests in turn, Knox finds himself faced with deception and betrayal on all sides, and only the enigmatic Angela Marchmont seems to offer a solution to the mystery. This 1920s whodunit will delight all fans of traditional country house murder stories.

Very fun novel, Benson is a comparable author to Christie
  • Not your best British mystery

This book was very predictable. I knew who did it before they even announced that someone had died. It also had a very similar storyline to an episode of the old Hercule Poirot series on PBS. There was an over abundance of British jargon, which was tedious.
  • Great setup, a bit obvious in the conclusion

Loved the characters and the set up! Enjoyed the secrets that got unfolded, but wish a bit more mystery remained at the end

Horribly predictable and a very boring read.

I didn’t much need Angela to solve the mystery for me, as it was too obvious that Sir Neville was already a goner when Roamund urged her ridiculously inept “friend” to accompany her to the study, pretending to converse through the door with her husband. From there, the “mystery” was utterly transparent. None of the main characters is particularly well drawn, though Sylvia and Joan are not as improbable as the others. If this was a first novel, I guess there might be some hope that things may improve in future attempts at the genre, but I’m not sure I’ll devote much energy to find out.
  • Great title for a great book

The best thing about this book is that it’s never a dull moment. This is the first book I’ve started and actually finished in the past 10 years. I do not read at all, but this book had my mind locked in. Totally worth every minute of reading.

This is a great story! I loved it! I had me guessing with each page! I ended up fallowing each character closely and begging for more when I finished it! I binge read for 3 hours because of all the turns! I highly recommend this to mystery lovers out there!
