Book Synopsis

The court of the gryphon king has ever been a dangerous and seductive place where Ishtar's blessing is both the hot breath of passion and the cold kiss of steel.

Yet as the childhood companion of King Ditanu, Iltani never doubted her place in either his kingdom or his heart. Then duty called her away to complete her training.

Now, a woman grown and a sword-maiden to the goddess Ishtar, Iltani returns and takes up her sacred destiny to protect the royal line. But so much has changed.

Ditanu most of all.

The youth she knew is gone. A stoic, untouchable king now sits the throne.

Does anything of their once deep bond survive?

Iltani must swiftly find her place in a court where cunning governors plot treason, trusted advisors orchestrate deceptions, and noblewomen seek to beguile King Ditanu using methods both fair and foul.

But the greatest threat of all is no mortal adversary. Ereshkigal, the Queen of the Underworld, desires to make Ditanu her consort and seize his kingdom for her own.

Ishtar's Blade is a fantasy romance loosely based on ancient Sumerian and Akkadian mythology. It's book 1 of the Ishtar's Legacy series.

  • Incredible angst and sensual tropes

A wonderful blend of aesthetics (descriptions of flowy clothing, gold beads and palace furnishings) and tropes (forced proximity, unintended arousal 😏, whump, actual father ML who is also so daddy, unrequited (or is it?) love, friends to lovers, and an active goddess manipulating their destiny). I loved how the FL&ML were in situations that were obviously intimate but because they had been such close friends she shrugs it off even as her heart races. There were some scenes I really liked for how deliberately enjoyable for the reader they were, like (minor spoiler) having the king pressed up against her back for a blood sharing ritual, and getting a little /revving of his gears/ from the goddess :)

This is the first book I have read from Ms Blackwood, and it won’t be the last. I just bought the second in the series. This book is grabbed me from the start, the world building is great, she takes us back in time of gods and mythical creatures. Full of action, war, and romance of course. The development of the main couple is great, and Cubs will break your heart. Lots mystery until the end.
