Book Synopsis

In her powerful and inspiring memoir, Cookie Johnson, wife of NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, shares details of her marriage, motherhood, faith, and how an HIV diagnosis twenty-five years ago changed the course of their lives forever.

On November 7, 1991, basketball icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson stunned the world with the news that he was HIV-positive. For the millions who watched, his announcement became a pivotal moment not only for the nation, but for his family and wife. Twenty-five years later, Cookie Johnson shares her story and the emotional journey that started on that day—from life as a pregnant and joyous newlywed to one filled with the fear that her husband would die, that she and her baby would be infected with the virus, and that their family would be shunned. Believing in Magic is the story of Cookie’s marriage to Earvin—nearly four decades of loving each other, losing their way, and eventually finding a path they never imagined.

Never before has Cookie shared her full account of the reasons she stayed and her life with Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Believing in Magic is her very personal story of survival and triumph as a wife, mother, and faith-filled woman.

WOW!!!!! In a time where you turn the television on and see over-indulged, self centered, no compassion, no empathy people of reality t.v. of WAGS and other trash, it' s wonderfully refreshing to read of a woman who puts G-d, family and her husband before the trappings of celebrity. I cried when I read of how she handled EJ being gay, so imagine my surprise knowing she's a woman of G-d. I wish my family could have handled finding out I am gay with as much honor and class. Thank you Cookie for standing up and educating us about HIV, motherhood and being a wife of a celebrity. You are a phenomenal person!!!! Everyone you have touched is blessed. Take care. Trish

Great book! It was great getting to know Cookie! I'm glad the book started with Cookie and her journey. It wasn't just a book about living with Magic and the diagnoses. The book allows you to meet Cookie and experience her feelings throughout her journey. No more background doe Cookie. Cookie rises to the top-out of the shadow of Magic Johnson. She is a strong , God fearing mother , wife and woman! Again, great read!

Kudos to Cookie Johnson for being transparent about her struggles and triumphs and to Deneen Miller for eloquently translating them. This book is so inspiring from a spiritual standpoint and for anyone who is having a challenge seeing the "light at the end of the tunnel." She assures us that it's there and you can't give up. I applaud her strength and resiliency.

I think it was a good book from a perspective the public never had. As a woman I realize that she did have a voice and in Gods time she let it be heard. She's a strong woman and someone I definitely admire.

I love love love this book. Cookie really let us into the Johnson's world. You gave me a better outlook on what marriage is all about. Being married for 10 years and with my husband for 20 years I see we can conquer it all. Nobody is perfect but believing in God and being strong will lead any marriage to last forever. God bless your family and thank you for reassurance on fighting until the end!
