Book Synopsis

A #1 national bestseller—“A yarn so packed with suspense, romance, literary reference, fascinating miscellaneous knowledge, and heart that only Stephen King could have written it. Marvelous—that is, full of marvels” (Booklist).

Since his wife died, Ralph Roberts has been having trouble sleeping. Each night he wakes up a bit earlier, until he’s barely sleeping at all. During his late night walks, he observes some strange things going on in Derry, Maine. He sees colored ribbons streaming from people’s heads, two strange little men wandering around town after dark, and more. He begins to suspect that these visions are something more than hallucinations brought on by lack of sleep.

There’s a definite mean streak running through this small New England city; underneath its ordinary surface awesome and terrifying forces are at work. The dying has been going on in Derry for a long, long time. Now Ralph is part of it…and lack of sleep is the least of his worries.

Returning to the same Maine town where It took place, a town that has haunted Stephen King for decades, Insomnia blends King’s trademark bone-chilling realism with supernatural terror to create yet another masterpiece of suspense.

The ending pulled at my heart strings so much that I had to hold back the tears a little bit. I’m amazed at how connected I felt to these fictional characters. Mr. King creates worlds and connections like no other… he is misrepresented as a horror writer, he is far beyond that and truly an artist. Highly recommended!

Been reading King for more than 30 years; and even though there have been some books I didn’t like that much, I enjoyed them all! Until I came across Insomnia! I do not recommend this book at all, sorry!

I read this one after finishing the Dark Tower series, trying to fill in some of the blanks. Although I will say I did have some interesting takeaways in that respect, as a novel on its own I just couldnt get into it. I really liked the first act, setting up Ed and Ralph, but almost everything after that seemed almost devoid of deep thought. As if King said 'wouldnt it be cool if...' Over and over again. Characters are introduced and then never heard from again, subjects of discussion are raised then never discussed again, just a general mish-mash of all elements. By the end it was just plain silly, 'magic' powers with no real explanation, and not even a mysterious origins that cam be pondered. Read more like the incoherent ramblings of a fifth graders journal. Sorry King, I love you and love your stories but not Insomnia.
