Book Synopsis

A New York Times-Bestseller!

For twelve-year-old Emily, the best thing about moving to San Francisco is that it's the home city of her literary idol: Garrison Griswold, book publisher and creator of the online sensation Book Scavenger (a game where books are hidden in cities all over the country and clues to find them are revealed through puzzles). Upon her arrival, however, Emily learns that Griswold has been attacked and is now in a coma, and no one knows anything about the epic new game he had been poised to launch. Then Emily and her new friend James discover an odd book, which they come to believe is from Griswold himself, and might contain the only copy of his mysterious new game.

Racing against time, Emily and James rush from clue to clue, desperate to figure out the secret at the heart of Griswold's new game—before those who attacked Griswold come after them too.

This book was so predictable and boring. The characters were extremely unlikable and rude. The settings of this book was also very unrealistic. The author fails to capture the reader. I had to skip through a lot of it because it was so hard to read. This book is one of my least favorite books.
  • Excruciatingly boring

Teachers are required to read this book to us out loud in certain periods of time at school. I will say one thing: Nobody ever finds interest in it, none of us listen and most of us are spotted being off task during the read aloud. The foreshadowing and future events of this book are way too predictable, it needs immense improvement.
  • boring read.

Imagine this, you’re curled up on the couch of your favorite library. You pull out a book and try to read it. I unfortunately pulled this book out, and was forced to read it against my own will by my teachers. From the first few chapters, I was bored, and agonized. I was forced to listen to content made for at the most, 8 year olds. I’m in 8th grade. This is not amusing, this is boring and miserable. The ciphers were childish and easy to solve, I found no joy in them. Why would a square be hard to identify? Shouldn’t the ways they solve the puzzles be the first step to your solution? My friends agree with me. Anyone can reach the “Sherlock Holmes” level in real life.
  • Generic and agonizing to read

Recently, our school has this connection program that allows the teachers to read to us students. The school chose this book to read to us. After reading the first chapter, I could already predict the plot of the book. Sure enough, I was right. The book has the generic plot of an adventure book for children, and I am sure that new and novice readers would enjoy the book, as they haven’t read many books. Unfortunately, I have seen too many books of this kind. The characters are also incredibly unrealistic. What kind of 12-year old girl that travels a lot has nothing to do but find books all over the country? What kind of boy would invite a girl he barely has met over to his house? What kind of social studies teacher would have the time to steal books all over the city? The dialogue between the characters is also unrealistic. It is as if they only exist to move the plot forward. Overall, it was very agonizing to “find out” the plot of the book, because I already knew what the characters would be up to.

We loved the ciphers and puzzles. There were some things in the book that weren’t necessary to the story line, but we were entertained overall.
