Great story and excellent writing as always. Narrator of audiobook is terrible. Completely takes away from the story and any m listening pleasure. So different from previous Pat Conroy audiobooks. Spoils the book. Read the print copy skip the audiobook!
  • Pat Conroy is always cathartic

For those of us who came from terrorizing roots, Pat Conroy can be cathartic. He has been for me for 30 years. This is his first actual memoir, and it is told in his usual style - he eloquently tells his anguished story about the faults of his parents, his siblings, and himself. I finish all of his books with at least some compassion for all. I especially love this book because it is a memoir, and further brings to life the characters in his novels that were based on the real people in his life, that he loves for better and for worse, faithfully and for always.

Through this book I witnessed my childhood as a military brat, Citadel graduate, and a son of the South. The book brought greater insight into Mr. Conroy's struggle with his father, who in the end had an infinite love of his family and The Corps. Thank you, Pat, for another great book. You are one of our great southern writers. P.S. My daughter is married to Buster's grandson.

well written, characters come to life and you feel it's like your own band of siblings. That is if you are from a family as dysfunctional as this one. It is a testimony to their love and strength, that they managed to love both their unlovable parents in the end. I have read and enjoyed each of Pat Conroys books. I think I understand him a little better now. BRAVO

Mr Conroy is a writer to be sure.I hope he has in him a fine novel with no illusion to his own psychosis or his dysfunctional family. Now that he has achieved a measure of personal happiness I a reader who has read it all, hope for a work of a different genre. While his readers admire his work,I think most of us are tired of paying a price to share his depression.Writer, your medical records are protected under federal law.Close them and let us have a great novel sans the psychiatric themes that course through your work.

This book is a moving story of pain and growth. At first it seemed like every other Southerner's drunk-father-vain-mother tale in the South. But the dark humor, gut twisting, and pure heart break Conroy exposes lifts it to a higher level and brought tears to my eyes. Give me MY crazy family any day!
