Book Synopsis

The heartbreaking, iconic true story of an abandoned little boy’s horrific journey through the American foster care system.

On a misty evening in Brooklyn, Jennings Michael Burch’s mother, too sick to care for him, left her eight-year-old son at an orphanage with the words, “I’ll be right back.” She wasn’t.

Shuttled through a bleak series of foster homes, orphanages, and institutions, Jennings never remained in any of them long enough to make a friend. Instead, he clung to a tattered stuffed animal named Doggie, his sole source of comfort in a frightening world.

Here, in his own words, Jennings Michael Burch reveals the abuse and neglect he experienced during his lost childhood. But while his experiences are both shocking and devastating, his story is ultimately one of hope—the triumphant tale of a forgotten child who somehow found the courage to reach out for love, and found it waiting for him.

I got to read this book in my middle school class and me the author. I enjoyed this book and it puts this messed up world in perspective. I don’t understand how any human being can treat a another person that way it breaks my heart and unfortunately it happens in this world. I learned a lot that day as so did my fellow classmates. I know I shedded a lot of tears that day but I aslo know that it opened my eyes to the world. I’m a mother now and I sat down with her and read this book and his other books. My daughter had the “no stranger danger” attitude and she has also opened her eyes to this world and understands bad things can happen as a child and as a adult. I would always recommend this book to everyone and anyone. Thank you to the author for sharing your life with us and others!~~Nicole Moyer

Our school read this book when I was younger (Middle school). The author came to our school to speak and answer questions we had. It was extremely emotional for the entire school. I have his signature with an article attachted somewhere in my boxes that are packed away. I believe reading this book as a child and meeting the person who the book was about, made a huge impact on my actions today.

This true story is nothing short of jaw dropping. I weeped, I sobbed, I laughed & I full blown cried. This is a story of strength, misfortune & truth that the system is broken. Life lessons make you stronger. Jennings, is the strongest boy you'll ever know. So powerful & moving. If I could save all the children in homes all over the world I would.

I read this in 5th grade and when I read this, from a 10 year old perspective this was the most tragic yet beautiful book. The boy that was going through all these tragic events that I was reading about made me respect the boy for surviving all the madness. How sometimes things would look good for Michael and the just as fast as they came, they were taken away from him. How he ran away from home at a young age for a couple of days and survived at that age. I simply fell in love with this book. I would recommend this book for the whole entire world if I could. This was one of the best books I've ever read.
