Book Synopsis

WHEN A MASKED MAN . . .

Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe-and won't back down . . .

MEETS HIS MATCH . . .

Artemis Greaves toils as a lady's companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads, she recognizes a kindred spirit-and is intrigued. She's even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day . . .

DESIRE IGNITES A DANGEROUS PASSION

Artemis makes a bold move: she demands that Maximus use his influence to free her imprisoned brother-or she will expose him as the Ghost. But blackmailing a powerful duke isn't without risks. Now that she has the tiger by the tail, can she withstand his ire-or the temptation of his embrace?

Before I read the book, I looked at the reviews. Someone said Maximus seemed abusive. Though I respect that opinion, I disagree. In my opinion, Maximus behaved about like you would expect. His concerns about Artemis as a wife were legit for his time. A lady’s companion would hope to be a Duke’s mistress at best. He never forced her into anything and he was clear with her about their relationship from the beginning. He wasn’t abusive and she gave enthusiastic consent. All that said, it’s a steamy romance with danger and humor. Fun read.

I LOVE Elizabeth Hoyt and the Maiden Lane series. Hoyt has crafted exceptional stories with fantastic characters whom readers love despite their flaws. This book is typically well-written, with a fantastic B-story and steamy sex scenes. However, I morally objected to this book. As someone who’s been in an abusive relationship, I couldn’t help but be disgusted at Maximus’ treatment of Artemis, and felt nothing but horror when she opted to stay with him. I realize it’s unfair to project my own personal experiences onto a book, but I honestly could not believe that the person who wrote Sweetest Scoundrel so thoughtfully could also write this book. If you’re a victim of abuse or rape, I would advise skipping this book - the one sour note in an otherwise beautiful series.

Excellent! I utterly enjoyed Duke of Midnight. After reading all of her other Maiden Lane novels, Elizabeth Hoyt continues to enthrall.

I had plan to read no more than two chapters to start but i got so caught up that I read the whole book. This is the best in the series for me. This ghost was raw and compelling. Although Artemis was a but unbelievable in some respects. Only thing I hate is the wait for the next book in this series. Awesome read!

As a Hoyt fan, I was disappointed in the latest book. While I was glad to learn the identity of the third Ghost, the whole Ghost theme is losing my interest. Also, I just didn't see Artemis as a goddess of the hunt, moon, or whatever. While the duke's pursuit of a mistress and wife may have been accepted behavior at the time, Artemis certainly betrayed her cousin in pursuing the duke. There were too many unresolved issues, such as the relationship between Artemis and Penelope, establishing that Apollo was not in fact a murderer, and whether the duke will continue as the Ghost. Highly recommend Hoyt's other romances.

Another great book in a great series. Do you like Batman but wish it were set in London in the 1700s and had more romance? Then this is for you. Wonderful, rich characters and lots of action. A total page turner. It never feels formulaic. The love story is clearly meant to be but the twists kept me guessing.
