Book Synopsis

The truth is, when you banish the gods from the world, they eventually come back—with a vengeance.

In the near future, Justin March lives in exile from the Republic of United North America. After failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims, Justin is surprised when he is sent back with a peculiar assignment—to solve a string of ritualistic murders steeped in seemingly unexplainable phenomena.

Justin’s return comes with an even bigger shock: His new partner and bodyguard, Mae Koskinen, is a prætorian, one of the Republic’s technologically enhanced supersoldiers. Mae’s inexplicable beauty and aristocratic upbringing attract Justin’s curiosity and desire, but her true nature holds more danger than anyone realizes.

As their investigation unfolds, Justin and Mae find themselves in the crosshairs of mysterious enemies. Powers greater than they can imagine have started to assemble in the shadows, preparing to reclaim a world that has renounced religion and where humans are merely gamepieces on their board.

I have read all of her books and I must say this is my favorite first book in a series she has written. The writing style is third person which is new for her but she did it well. The characters are complex and different and the plot line is also very different. It take a little while to understand it, but overall it was very well written and I cannot wait for the second book. Very excited!

This book is my least favorite of Richelle's novels. I completely devoured her other novels. I had to force myself to finish this book and Six weeks later, I've finished. This book was boring to read, but would make for an exciting movie! This book would be better suited for the screen. It's a good story, just boring to read. Did not like the narrative. Richelle is a genius and very successfully entertaining when she does what she does best... And that's first person/ character interaction dialogue. I found myself more entertained when reading the character dialogue rather than the narration. Having said that, I don't know if I will continue with this series. I am however looking forward to reading the releases of her other series that are in the works.
  • Better than I expected

When I first purchased this book, I admit I was a little doubtful and was even more disappointed when I finished the first few chapters. It seemed like I had just wasted cash on a book full of cliches and a predictable plot. But luckily I forced myself to finish reading e book in order to try and get the most out of what I paid for and was surprised by how the story unfolded. Some of the characters were indeed a bit cliche to me, but the over all theme of the story was very interesting to me. The society richelle mead creates is a fascinating one, to say the least, and I don't think our own society is truly that far away from.

I felt this book was well written and the character development was good. What I didn't like was how we are strung on and on without knowing what the book is about. In a way it reminded me of Seinfeld, without the humor, because it just goes on about the lives of these people but there seems to be no real point or plot line. That worked with Seinfeld. As long as you forget trying to figure out a plot, it works here. Interesting characters just leading their lives. We receive vague hints throughout as to the plot, but nothing about where this is going and why we should care about these people shows up for quite a while. lEventually we find out about supernatural beings and the story line becomes clear. Will I read the next one? Maybe, maybe not. Do I regret spending the time reading it? No, it was a beach read and served it's purpose.
