Book Synopsis

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S 100 BEST MYSTERY AND THRILLER BOOKS OF ALL TIME • Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror. Jack Torrance takes a job as the caretaker of the remote Overlook Hotel. As the brutal winter sets in, the hotel's dark secrets begin to unravel.

“An undisputed master of suspense and terror.” —The Washington Post

Jack Torrance’s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he’ll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote . . . and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Well, the graphic images of evil incarnate The Overlook will certainly keep me up at night. Makes it hard to feel like you’re ever alone in the dark at night! But I find myself saddened the most by the fact that a well-meaning father tried his best against many odds, and still couldn’t protect his family in the end. Truly no winners here. Despite all of the supernatural horrors in this book, there’s a very familiar humanity fighting to live that will haunt you more than anything else.

Favorite book so far by Stephen King! The book was so much better than the movie in my opinion but I do think the movie did very good at picking the characters based on their descriptions and personalities in the book.

Enjoyed this read and comparing it to the Stanley Kubrick adaptation. I understand that things had to be changed to appeal and make sense in a movie. This story has so much more depth to it than the movie does and has me thinking so much about the roles and relationships between a father and son.

Steven King is not an author, he is a story teller, and he hit it out of the park with this book!
