This is an entertaining story. It's in the past, but she's a strong female lead. She runs an orphanage and needs a wealthy donor to help fund it. He needs a partner to help him try to find someone who is brutally murdering women, mostly prostitutes if I remember correctly. They develop feelings of course, but they both have other issues. She has a checkered romantic past. He has a fetish for tying lovers up. It was definitely worth my time reading it.

Wicked Intentions got off to a bit of a rocky start. Elizabeth Hoyt has a unique (to me, at least) writing voice and it really threw me off at first. It has an old-fashioned feel that actually really fit the story quite well once I got used to the flow. Temperance was a little confusing at first. I was surprised that a woman of her social class - not nobility, but far from slums - would be willing to take Lord Caire up on his offer. While I greatly admire the reasons she does, it was so out of place for compared to the rest of her personality. I was also quite confused as to her huge (and I mean huge) repulsion when it came to matters of sex. Thankfully, this was explained very nicely late in the book, but I wish I had known sooner so I had liked her better all along the way. Lord Caire was quite a dynamic character, and he was what really kept the story going for me. He has some very interesting characteristics that made him stand out and I really wanted to see what he would do next and why. His relationship with Temperance was a great one. His search to find something to "feel" really seemed to shine through and I loved it. Temperance's family has a lot going on in the background - I imagine we'll be seeing more of them in future parts of the series. I enjoyed how their part of the story really filled out Temperance's character for me. I hope we do get to see them all again. *This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

One of the best I've read. Great plot and characters. Gripping.
  • Hoyt at her best

I've read several of Hoyt's historical romances and this is by far my favorite. Two very interesting characters, a notorious but vulnerable aristocrat and a prim widow who harbors a guilty secret. A plot -- bargain -- that brings them together repeatedly in the dark alleys of St Giles and the ballrooms of London society. It is also nice to get a glimpse of other characters who have their own books, such as Temperance's brother Winter Makepeace, who is the Ghost in Thief of Shadows.

    4. 5 stars. I bought the book for the premise and wasn't disappointed. One of my favorite themes is a hero who starts out bad and is redeemed by love. He's very bad and the heroine isn't perfect, either. Nor was the story perfect, but it did deliver on its promise (even if we never knew quite where the hero issue with touch stemmed from). I was pulled in and kept in. The parts with the heroine's sister didn't blend with the rest of the story, but they did add interest. The heat built slowly, but once it started, it exceeded expectations. The mild bondage was a nice twist. Good historic detail and language without an excess of it. Darker in tone, and don't look for a lot of witty banter in this one, either.
