Book Synopsis

In Lost Rider, the first Western romance in New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Harper Sloan’s Coming Home series, an injured rodeo star encounters an old flame but will she be just what he needs to get back in the saddle?

Maverick Austin Davis is forced to return home after a ten-year career as a rodeo star. After one too many head injuries, he’s off the circuit and in the horse farming business, something he’s never taken much of a shine to, but now that it’s his late father’s legacy, familial duty calls. How will Maverick find his way after the only dream he ever had for himself is over?

Enter Leighton Elizabeth James, an ugly duckling turned beauty from Maverick’s childhood—his younger sister’s best friend, to be exact, and someone whose heart he stomped all over when she confessed her crush to him ten years back. Now Leighton is back in Maverick’s life, no longer the insecure, love-stricken teen—and Maverick can’t help but take notice. Sparks fly between them, but will Leighton be able to open her heart to the one man who broke it all those years ago?

Written in the vein of Diana Palmer and Lindsay McKenna, this Texas-set series is filled with sizzle, heart, and plenty of cowboys!

I haven't read a "cowboy" story for probably close to 20 years. Just the type of story that really hasn't appealed to me for quite some time. I ALMOST took a pass at this book, but it's by one of my all time favorite authors. And I have to admit, I really enjoyed it. Maverick had a very rough childhood and left town, leaving the girl he loved behind. But when he comes back, oh how I hated that jackass. He was rude and nasty to Clay, Quinn and especially to Leigh (of course the jerk didn't recognize her either). But I believe a lot of that had to stem from the reason he was back in town. Maverick and Leighton have a magical love. Strong and independent in each of their own rights, but together... they are so much more! My favorite side character was Marybeth Perkins. I really wish there had been more of her in this book and I truly hope to see more of her in the rest of this series. When she grabbed Maverick's ear... smh. Now I'm impatiently waiting for Clay and Quinn to get their stories.

I give this one 5 seriously hot cowboy stars!! This was such a great story I hated to see it end. Great writing and characters with low angst, lots of fun, and some sizzling sexy times. Simply a purely pleasurable read. Leigh had a serious crush on Maverick ten years ago and that one night she thought maybe he cared for her too. The next day everything had changed and Maverick was out of her life. Now ten years later Maverick is back in town and threatening to break her heart again. Can she be strong and resist him the way she knows she should?? I highly recommend this one to everyone.

A second chance romance has Maverick coming home 10 years after crushing Leighton's heart at the tender age of 16. There is a lot of heart to this story and it starts out pretty rough with the way Maverick handled Leighton, but then you start to learn why he was so harsh and how he truly feels. The book starts out with Maverick coming home for the first time after leaving town 10 years prior, but we also get flashbacks to when they were teenagers to show the bond they had before he left. Maverick is bitter and angry, not only from losing his bull riding career, but also his father's funeral. A father he ran away from as soon as he turned 18. To get away from his abusive father, he severed the bond with Leighton and he soon realizes how much he he has to repair with her. It starts out a little rough but I liked that this author didn't dwell too much on them apart, but more of the couple working things out together. The second half of the book was a lot sweeter than I was expecting. Maverick may have needed to heal the most but we see that his sister and brother also have very deep wounds. This book set up both siblings nicely for their own story to come. ARC provided by Netgalley.

Cowboys are rarely my thing, but holy cow I'm in love with Maverick. I now want my very own cowboy. Sign me up! Lost Rider really is an amazing second chance romance, I adored these characters and am super excited for the next book in this series. I actually tried to drag the ending out as long as possible, I sped through the beginning then realized I was almost done and freaked because I did not want it to end.
